Cape Town, South Africa, is an all-year-round destination. Surrounded by magnificent mountains, wine farms and beaches, each region has its own events and places of interest without your having to travel hours in the car.
Accommodation in Cape Town is quite simply excellent value when combined with the benefits of Cape hospitality from guesthouses, restaurants and the many entertainment venues in superb surroundings. Activity choices are several:
¨ Adventure sports are fairly new on the yuppie adventure seekers agenda in Cape Town and include sand boarding, kite surfing, jet skiing, tandem paragliding, scuba diving, shark cage-diving, quad biking, abseiling, hiking and horse riding. These activities are made possible at Cape Town’s magnificent beaches, mountains, water sport venues and the sea. There are several businesses offering transport and training for day excursions.
¨ Eco-tourism is big in Cape Town with its beautiful indigenous ‘Fynbos kingdom’, penguin colonies, nature reserves and growing number of game lodges that offer a bit of the wild side. Some game farms even offer a safari with the ‘Big Five’!
Hiking is popular and could include The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, famous for its Cape Point Lighthouse and beautiful vistas of the ocean, historically known as the Cape of Storms by yester-year seafarers.
¨ History, cultural activities and theatre are never far from each other when taking the ferry to Robben Island, or visiting the Cape Malay Quarter or perhaps attending an open-air concert on one of the historic wine estates.
Kirstenbosch Gardens plays host to several international music concerts as part of its Summer Sunset Concert series. It is the perfect venue for a picnic during the concert in the garden amphitheatre. The Cape Town Flower and Garden Show is traditionally held on Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West, just outside Cape Town.
¨ Art, crafts and shopping for curios, clothing, or leather are available at a diverse range of venues from large shopping malls to farm stalls and even street trading like that on cobbled Green Market Square.
The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is Cape Town’s top destination for tourists as a working harbour and venue for entertainment, restaurants, and harbour cruises. The Robben Island Ferry departs from this venue.
¨ Family entertainment is never very far away when options include camel rides, ostrich or adventure farmyards, ice-rinks or theme parks. The beaches are clean and safe and generally have life guards in peak season;
¨ Many travellers come to the Cape for golf. There are many excellent golf courses that leave the golf enthusiast spoilt for choice. The weather allows for golf all year round and if it is raining – the Cape has a Mediterranean climate with rain in winter - a drive around the Cape Peninsula or to the many wine estates is always a relaxing alternative.
¨ Newlands Rugby Stadium will host the British and Irish Lions Tour on 13th and 23rd June for the Cape Town fixtures. Newlands also hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup opening match and was the venue for ‘The Lions’ first tour to South Africa – back in 1891!
And while on the topic of Sport, Cape Town is a-buzz with preparations for the FIFA World Cup Soccer in 2010. Construction is still underway at the Green Point Stadium and urban park entertainment area.
When selecting self catering or bed and breakfast accommodation, choose an area nearest your favourite pastime and choice of entertainment. This will at least ensure that you do not allow yourself to get sidetracked by the diversity and beauty of the area.
Make the best of your trip in Cape Town and surrounds!
