Vorarlberg is the westernmost state of the country of Austria , touching the borders of three neighboring countries, Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Next to Vienna, it is the smallest state of the country. Its capital is the beautiful city of Bregenz, situated on a plateau. It is located on the eastern shores of Lake Constance which is Central Europe’s third largest lake.

Vorarlberg is a popular holiday destination with families staying in self catering holiday accommodation. Many tourists like to rent ski chalets and self catering holiday apartments and use these holiday homes as a base to explore the local area.

Vorarlberg’s capital is well worth a visit as the city has a long history and offers panoramic views. The city’s roots can be traced back to the Romans who founded the city in 15 BC and named it Brigantium. The city’s ideal situation, near the Alps and between Lake Constance and the Pfander Mountain, results in sights that are breathtakingly beautiful.

The pleasure boat excursions provide an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of Vorarlberg from a different perspective. The city also organizes an annual summer music festival called the Bregenzer Festspiele. It features a different opera every two years. The concerts are performed near the edge of the lake on open-air floating stage. The festival also attracts many visitors because of the international reputation of the dance festival, various exhibitions and concerts.

The Kunsthaus museum in Bregenz, built by a Swiss architect, specializes in modern art. It has a unique lighting system that combines artificial and natural light providing the visitors with an extraordinary experience. Another place worth visiting is the Kunstlerhaus Bregenz. It hosts various exhibitions organized by the association of professional Vorarlberg artists.

The Bregenzerwald mountain range that lies in the Northern Limestone Alps is also famous for its dairy products andhas many ski chalets and holiday homes that can be rented as self catering holiday accommodation. Bregenzerwald is most famous as a skiing resort but it has other attractions too such as the “Bregenzerwalder Cheese Route” and Schwarzenberg’s festival of classical music. Bregenzerwald has become a favorite destination for those who seek to experience old traditions, genuine hospitality and enjoy the beautiful unspoiled nature.

The Karren in largest district in Vorarlberg. The Dornbirn district offers an exquisite view of the Lake Constance and of the three countries next to it which are Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Dornbirn has many museums with an alpine nature museum. There is also the largest Rolls Royce museum in the world, a Jewish museum and the Rheinschauen museum, that can be accessed through the narrow gauge steam railway.

Vorarlberg is a perfect example that size is not a pre requisite of beauty. Despite being the second smallest state, Vorarlberg does not fall short of attractions. Apart from the Bregenzerwald, Vorarlberg has numerous other mountains and ski resorts that attracts holiday makers who stay in ski chalets and self catering holiday apartments.

The Arlberg region, the Brandnertal and the Montafon are its major ski resorts. Surrounded by various mountain ranges, the Arlberg region offers one of the most impressive landscapes of Europe.

Vorarlberg combines the beauty of its landscapes, culture, tradition and modernity. It offers a serene and peaceful way of life. Despite such diverse characteristics Vorarlberg still has a common identity. The state presents a beautiful harmony between nature and man and many families come on holiday and stay in ski chalets to experience the unique charm and character of this region.
